Gardens at the Tavern, featuring plants commonly used in the 1700s.

Burnham Tavern Garden

A project begun in 2007 by volunteer gardeners with the UMaine Cooperative Extension of Washington County provided a starting point for today's herb garden.

The goal was to use historically accurate plantings to create a garden typifying what might have surrounded a busy tavern in the late 1700s.  Research indicated that Machias, a lumber mill town, grew little food, most came by ship. Plants were for food and medicinal purposes, not just ornamental.
